The gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication network linking the gut and brain, has been linked to mood, cognition, and overall mental health. Research has shown that the gut microbiota can impact brain health through the production of chemicals that interact with the communication network. Thus, foods and bioactives that can beneficially change microbiota composition or function might impact brain health. As such, National Dairy Council is seeking pre-proposals on the impact of dairy foods (milk, cheese, or yogurt) or dairy-derived bioactives on the microbiota and their direct or indirect impact on mood, cognition, stress, depressional or anxiety. Animal models, prospective observational studies and/or dietary intervention trials will be considered. Studies that examine diverse populations (e.g., different age, gender, and racial groups) are encouraged.
